Five Ways I Deal With Flying Anxiety

I used to love to fly. I loved seeing the world from 32,000 feet in the air and the fun anticipation of heading on a new adventure. On a trip to Alaska several years ago, I was looking out the window when I saw a large piece of metal come loose and fall from our plane. Thankfully, we landed safely, but the turbulence that followed planted the seed for my anxiety.

I have had some more unfortunate circumstances since that incident, which has turned my initial fears into full-blown anxiety. The minute I book a trip, I start worrying about the plane ride. There have been times where I have sat in the airport, not sure if I would be able to force myself to get on the plane. While I’m not sure I will ever completely get over my fear, I wanted to share the five ways I try to manage my anxiety.

Get a good night’s sleep.
This doesn’t always happen since I often stay awake worrying about the flight, but the more sleep I get, the calmer I am the morning of the flight. We usually book our flights at the crack of dawn, so getting a good night’s sleep is really important to me.

Avoid caffeine.
I love coffee, but when I am anxious, caffeine makes me feel so much worse. I have forced myself to avoid it before getting on a plane.

Do research.
Even though I know many of the stats by heart, it still helps me to look up information about planes and flying before I leave for a trip. It’s a great way to remind myself that flying is safe.

Start reading a good book before boarding.
I fly better when I am distracted, so it is best for me to have a book I am already into before I board. That way I am so eager to keep reading and focus less on my fear.

Watch the flight tracker.
I love watching the flight tracker to see where we are and how much longer we have until we land. It doesn’t work well for me if we are over water, but otherwise it can keep me distracted for hours.

Do you have flying anxiety? How do you deal with it?

Friday Favorites: Five Cardigans I Love for Fall

Happy Friday, friends! Today is a great day because by the time most of y’all are reading this, my best friend will be in town to spend the long weekend with me. I’m so excited to show her around Chicago.

With the constant weather changes this time of year, cardigans are my favorite way to layer. I might have quite a few in my closet, but I constantly find more I want to buy. Instead of buying them, I thought I would share them with y’all instead.

The price of this cardigan is a little high for me, but doesn’t it look cozy? I love anything that makes me feel like I am wrapped up in a blanket.

/ / Two

One of the cardigan colors I am missing is burgundy, so I love this cozy option from Loft. I can't decide if I love the burgundy or the gray color more.

/ / Three
I know I’m not the only one obsessed with stripes this season, and this striped cardigan is adorable.

/ / Four
This plaid cardigan makes me happy. I can think of so many fun outfits with it!

/ / Five
I love mustard and have been searching for a cute mustard cardigan. I think I need this one from Target in my life!

Life Update: Four Months in Chicago

I almost accidently skipped doing my four-month update because September passed so quickly. Our September in Chicago was one of my favorite months here so far—Chris had a much-needed two weeks off, so I tried to fill it with as many fun activities as possible.

We kicked off September and college football season by heading to Evanston for Northwestern vs. Stanford. We had a blast enjoying the beautiful weather and cheering on Northwestern with the rest of the crowd. It’s always fun to be part of the winning team’s crowd, and it turns out Northwestern is pretty good this year. I also loved the city of Evanston, especially the downtown area. If we ever decide to move back to Chicago, I would love to live there.

My favorite part of September was our Lake Michigan Circle Tour road trip. We had the best time exploring Michigan and Wisconsin, and I can’t wait to share more about our trip with y’all.

Chris headed back to work the day after we got home, but his parents came into town a few days later. Chris is currently on a hard service, so he didn’t get to spend much time with us, but I had fun hanging out with his parents. We did two boat tours-a river and lake cruise and an architecture river cruise. I will write about both cruises at some point, but we had a wonderful time learning more about the city.

Of course, I can’t do a life in Chicago update without mentioning food. As y’all already know, our goal is to eat our way through Chicago this year, so we tried some delicious new places (and some old favorites). One of my favorite places this month was Luke’s Lobster. My in-laws and I were shopping on State Street, so we headed over to Luke’s Lobster for lunch. I couldn’t decide on a roll, so I went with the “Taste of Maine” combo that included a third of a shrimp roll, a third of a lobster roll, a third of a crab roll, and some meaty crab claws. Everything was delicious, but the lobster roll was (surprisingly) my favorite.

Chris got a Saturday off, so we headed over to the West Loop to try Glazed and Infused. I’m not exaggerating when I say the red velvet doughnut was the best doughnut I’ve ever had in my life. The doughnut was soft, and the cream cheese frosting was amazing. I’ve been told that Stan’s Donuts is even better, but I’m not sure how that would be possible.

We had also planned to try Au Cheval that day, but the wait was three hours, and there is no way my hangry self could handle that. I also firmly believe no food is worth waiting three hours, but I might change my mind once we try it.

I can’t believe we are already over a third of our way through our year here. Here’s to another great month and more beautiful sunsets!

Chicago Travel: Best Tours Cupcake Tour

When Chris got a surprise day off on Saturday, I wanted to do something fun to help him relax. We had purchased a Groupon for the Best Tours Cupcake Tour for our anniversary, but since we can’t usually book in advance, the tour was full every time we could go. We were so excited when we saw there was space available last minute for Saturday.

Our tour guide for the tour was Seth, and he really made it a great experience. Not only did he have interesting facts about each bakery we visited, but he also told us about the buildings we passed on the way. Plus, he really got to know each person on our tour and had a great sense of humor (he even performs stand-up comedy around Chicago).

The tour took two hours and included five stops. Of course we picked the first truly cold day since we moved here to do the tour—it was in the low 50s with 40 mph winds. Full disclosure: I was feeling terrible, so my photos aren’t the best. I hope they still give y’all a feel for the tour.

Our first stop was West Town Bakery, a fun spot in River North that uses only organic and all-natural ingredients. I tried a delicious red velvet cupcake while Chris had the vegan chocolate chocolate cupcake. He said it was really good and didn’t taste vegan at all.

Next, we headed to the Water Tower Place, a popular mall on Michigan Ave. There we stopped at Sacred Ground Bakery and CafĂ© for the largest cupcake on our tour. I went with a vanilla cupcake, which had some of the best icing I’ve ever had, and Chris loved the carrot cake cupcake.

Our third stop was L’Appetito…for gelato. It was strange to get gelato on a cupcake tour, but I got the limone gelato and used it as a frozen lemonade since all the sweet cupcakes were making me thirsty. Chris decided to be a basic girl and went with the pumpkin gelato. Honestly, we have had better gelato in town and wouldn’t go back, but it was still a good stop.

You can’t do a cupcake tour without heading to Sprinkles, so that was our fourth stop. Chris and I both had the red velvet cupcake. Even though the store itself is tiny, the cupcake ATM machine out front is a fun alternative.

The tour really saved the best for last with our visit to More Cupcakes. At that point, I was way too full to eat another bite, so they packed up the mini cupcakes for me to try at home. We tried the salted caramel, which was the best cupcake we had all day. The cupcake was so moist with a delicious caramel center. We also tried the BLT cupcake, which is a savory cupcake that consists of a bacon biscuit with ranch dressing and a tomato on top. I wasn’t keen on trying it, but it was surprisingly delicious! Even though More Cupcakes is far from us, I’m sure we’ll head there again as soon as possible.

Friday Favorites: Five Fall Recipes We Love

Happy October, friends! Now that the temperatures have dropped to the 60s, it really feels like fall in Chicago, and all I want to eat is comfort food. Today, I wanted to share five recipes that we make constantly in the fall.

Fall Recipe

/ / One
Sweet Corn Chili

We made Mix and Match Mama’s Sweet Corn Chili at least once a week last fall, and I can’t wait to start making it again.

/ / Two
Pumpkin Crumble Bread

We made Lisa Loves John’s Pumpkin Crumble Bread yesterday and had to restrain myself from eating the whole loaf in one sitting. It was so good, Chris brought the other loaf to share with other residents at the hospital.

/ / Three
Slow Cooker Chicken Cordon Bleu

I love using the slow cooker in the fall (and pretty much any other season), and Chef in Training’s Slow Cooker Chicken Cordon Bleu is delicious.

/ / Four
 Sausage and Corn Chowder

We don’t make a lot of soups in the summer, but once the temperatures fall, I love a good soup. Mix and Match Mama’s Sausage and Corn Chowder is an amazing pick-me-up meal after a long day.

/ / Five
Fall recipes from Michael Symon’s “5 for 5 for Every Season.”

I received Michael Symon’s new cookbook from Blogging for Books, and I’m obsessed. The book is divided into seasons and has easy recipes to make with five fresh ingredients and only five minutes of heat. I’m sure y’all noticed that the recipes I mentioned above aren’t exactly healthy. As much as I love those meals, I try to make as many healthy meals a week as I can.

Some of my fall favorites from the book are pecan-crusted chicken with fresh cranberry sauce and autumn panzanella. With Pinterest, I rarely use cookbooks anymore, but I still love having a physical copy of the recipe to use while cooking. I might just have to try all 165 recipes in this book!

I received a copy of "5 for 5 for Every Season" from Blogging for Books for review, but all opinions are my own.

I love trying out new recipes! What are you making this fall?
