Friday Favorites: Holiday Swaps and Boots

Happy Friday, friends! It is such a lovely Friday here in Texas. After a few days of downpours, we finally have some beautiful fall weather. Here are my Friday favorites this week:

/ / One:
My hubby comes home a week from today! He will only be home a few days until he has to leave for his next interview, but as I mentioned in my confessions, I have been missing him terribly and can’t wait to see him!

/ / Two:
I absolutely love swaps, and I think they are even more fun for Christmas. This year, I am participating in the Redditgifts Secret Santa, the Oak & Oats Great Christmas Exchange, and the CG Swaps Twelve Days of Christmas Swap. I love getting to know new people and sending them gifts.

/ / Three:
Speaking of the holidays, I am super excited for our New Year’s cruise this year! I am going to miss doing New Year’s with my family (Russian New Year’s is its own brand of crazy), but I am looking forward to a fun time with my hubby and my in-laws. If you see me posting lots of summery dresses on this blog in the middle of winter, you’ll know why.

/ / Four:
I am trying to stay away from the Nordstrom 40 percent off clearance sale, but it’s not working. I desperately need new shoes. (Seriously, I have worn out all my favorites to the point that it’s embarrassing.) Here are my favorites from the clearance sale:
/ / Five:
It’s been far too long since I posted a photo of my sweet Sky. Even though she made this week fun, I am so thankful for her, especially when Chris is away.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

A Wednesday Confession Session

Hello, friends! Today felt like a good day to confess some things to you. I really love it when others do these posts because it’s a way to get to know bloggers, and since I’m still new at this, I hope it helps you get to know me.

I confess…I have five incomplete blog post drafts, but I can’t seem to finish a single one. Hence, this confession post.
I confess…I always try to have all my posts ready for the week on the weekend, but it never happens. I’m happy when I have my Monday post ready early on Sunday. Blah, one of these days I’ll be able to manage it better.
I confess...I was so excited to vote for the first time yesterday as a US citizen! It was a long time coming so it was a great feeling to get to finally vote.
I confess…Things always go hilariously wrong when Chris is out of town. This time, my dog threw up all over my bed the first night. Then, while I was cleaning it up, she proceeded to get sick all over her cage. It was lovely.
I confess…I sometimes feel pathetic for missing Chris as much as I do. This is the longest we have been apart in our marriage (two weeks), and it’s been no fun. We did long distance while dating, but it’s not the same. Also, our DVR is almost full, and I have strict orders not to watch our shows without him.
I confess…I went online on JCPenney to buy a shirt for Chris…and ended up with a shirt for Chris and two sweaters and dresses for me. I obviously had to get past the $99 mark for free shipping. On another note, I have been impressed with JCPenney clothes and quality lately. I used to avoid it, but I have gotten a few things recently at a good price and really liked them!
I confess…I am not doing a good job with reading lately. I thought I would pick it up over the weekend, but it hasn’t happened. I am really hoping to get back into it soon because I only have nine books left before I hit my goal of 50 books. Plus, I have several interesting advance reading copies to read that I want to share once I’m done!
I hope you have a wonderful Wednesday!

Quick Trip: 24 Hours in Boston

I am so excited to introduce a new series: Quick Trip: What to do in a city when you only have 24 hours. Even though I prefer longer trips (who doesn’t?), sometimes I have to make the most of 24 hours in a city. I wanted to put together a series that highlights my favorite things to eat, see, and do in a short time. This will be an evolving series so I appreciate your feedback.

It didn’t take me long to fall in love with Boston. For some reason, I have always felt an attachment to the city, and I was so excited to finally visit.  With such high expectations I was prepared to be disappointed, but I loved the food, history, and the culture.
What to do:
I really love history so we had planned to do a self-guided tour of the Freedom Trail, but when we landed, it was pouring. We still wanted to see the city, but it was too windy to walk around with an umbrella so we opted for a trolley tour. I am so glad we did! Even though we usually prefer to explore on our own, the trolley was perfect for a rainy day.
We couldn’t really take advantage of the hop off option, but the guides were funny and informative, and we were able to see a significant amount of the city in a short time. There are several trolley companies, but we chose the Old Town Trolley Tours. The tour also included a ticket to the Boston Tea Party Museum and a Boston Harbor cruise, but we ran out of time to do the museum, and it was raining too hard to do the Boston Harbor cruise. You can also use the trolley tour as your taxi—there are 20 total stops, and it can take you as far as Cambridge and Beacon Hill. Some of the highlights for me were seeing the Trinity Church, Massachusetts State House, the Old State House, USS Constitution, and Fenway Park.

The weather cleared up in the evening so we got a chance to walk part of the Freedom Trail. We explored Faneuil Hall, saw Paul Revere’s house, got a close-up photo of the Massachusetts State House, and enjoyed the evening at the Public Garden.
Where to eat:
We were told by many people that Boston is known for seafood, steak, Italian food, and Irish food so we knew we wanted to try those cuisines. We went to Legal Seafood for lunch, and I had an amazing crab cake.
For dinner, Biana told me that we couldn’t go wrong in the North End, and we met one of my friends from high school for a meal at Panza. Here’s the thing: At home I usually don’t go out for Italian food because I think it is much cheaper and tastes just as good to make it at home. Panza proved me wrong. The meal was delicious and unique enough that I didn’t feel like I could easily make it at home. Be prepared to wait at most of the restaurants in the North End, even with a reservation. We had a 6 p.m. reservation and were seated around 7 p.m. Most of the restaurants in the North End are small and don’t have many tables so seating largely depends on when other people leave. We didn’t mind waiting, but it could be difficult for those on a tight schedule.
Where to stay:
Hotels in Boston are expensive so if you want to save money, you can book a hotel in Quincy or Cambridge and take the T into the city. However, if you only have 24 hours, it would be ideal to stay in Boston if you can find a deal. When we were in Boston, there was a convention with 10,000 people in town, so even though we booked six months in advance, the prices were high.
We got a deal (if you can call it that) on Priceline to stay at the Taj Boston, which was in the perfect location. We could walk anywhere we wanted from the hotel, it was close to the Old Town Trolley stop, and our room had a beautiful view of the Public Garden. My hubby was a bit thrown off because they don’t allow tennis shoes in the lobby, and when we went down to dinner, everyone around us was in ball gowns and tuxedos for a wedding. The room was nice. Was it worth the price tag? For most places, no, but for an ideal location in Boston, probably.
Have more time?
On the morning before the cruise, we visited the USS Constitution (We liked it so much that I’m going to do a separate post on it) and explored the Boston Harbor area. If we had more time, I would have loved to do a Boston Harbor cruise.
Have you been to Boston? What are the sights you think are must-sees? I would also love your feedback on my new Quick Trip series. I don’t think others will be nearly this long, but I’m sure it’ll change as I keep going. Are there any specific cities that you’d like me to highlight? I am also open to Quick Trip guest posts so if you want to do a Quick Trip on your hometown or a place you visited, I would love to have you!

Friday Favorites: Formal Dresses and Book Challenges

What a difference a week makes! Thankfully, this week was so much better than last week (seriously an understatement). That being said, I’m definitely ready for the weekend! Here are my Friday favorites for this week:

/ / One:
This weekend is Baylor Homecoming! Baylor is credited with having the oldest homecoming in the nation, and it is so much fun! Sadly, we can’t go this year due to interviews, but I am excited to see everyone’s photos.
/ / Two:
The weather is finally going to cooperate this weekend. We had crazy record highs lately (it hit 90 a few days ago), but it is finally going to cool down a bit. The high is 61 tomorrow! (I know all you people from up North are laughing at me right now, but it’s super exciting).

/ / Three:
I am already trying to figure out what I want to wear for the formal nights on our next cruise (because that’s what I do), and I’ve had my eye on this dress for weeks. Sadly, it sold out of my size while we were on the cruise, but it has been restocked before so I hope it will again!

/ / Four:
I am nine books away from my goal of reading 50 books this year, but it’s starting to get harder to read. I finished the goal last year, and I am hoping I can do it again!

/ / Five:
I have been scheming up a few new things for the blog, and I am so excited to share! Sorry for the ambiguity for now, but I hope y’all like my ideas as much as I do. :)

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Cruise Ship Review: Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas

If I could, I would live on a cruise ship.  Constant views of the ocean and travel to beautiful destinations? Yes, please. This was my third cruise on Royal Caribbean, and I somehow always end up on a Radiance Class ship. I am a fan of the Radiance Class because they are mid-sized ships with gorgeous views of the sea at every corner.
The Brilliance of the Seas is different from the other Radiance Class ships I have sailed. Instead of a grand staircase, there is a large Centrum. Although I do like the look of a grand staircase, the Brilliance of the Seas had lots of open space, which we loved. We also loved that the ship was refurbished last year. Everything sparkled. There’s a reason we keep gravitating towards the Radiance Class (though I am going to try a new class next time we cruise Royal Caribbean).
Our room:
We booked a deluxe balcony room, and it was perfect! We had plenty of room with a nice closet and space to store our bags. It was so fun to order room service and sit out and enjoy the view from the balcony.
Food:
Although the food in the dining room food was, in general, nothing to write home about, there were always one or two things that stood out on the menu.  There were definitely several desserts that I would eat again and again. The two-story Minstrel Dining room was beautiful, though if you’re looking for small tables, they are hard to find. Our table (and many of the tables around us) seated 10 people. If we have to be at a large table, we usually prefer tables with six to eight people because it’s easier to have a conversation. If you do My Time Dining, there are more tables for two people or smaller groups.
Our first time eating at the Windjammer was disappointing, but we liked it much better the second time. We also liked going to the Minstrel Dining Room for lunch with a make-your-own salad bar where they will chop your salad.
Entertainment:
Honestly, Chris and I aren’t fans of the singers and dancers on Royal Caribbean. We have enjoyed the shows on other cruise ships, but the production shows on Royal aren’t our favorites. That being said, we really liked all of the guest entertainers. David Klinkenberg was impressive on the violin, and Michael Menes performs an entertaining one-man variety show. We also saw an impersonator that we had seen on a previous cruise, but he was just as funny the second time around.
Have you ever been on a cruise? What is your favorite cruise line?
